JIDP Phase 5 – Train the Trainer Program & International Congress on Social Inclusion Through Judo
Madrid, Spain | 10–12 July 2025

We are so proud and honoured to be the lead partner for this momentous event. Not only did we participate with four of our professional inclusive coaches we designed and delivered the content of the congress. As participants return to their home countries, we take a moment to reflect on what was truly a milestone event in the development of adaptive judo coaching across Europe. The past few days in Madrid marked a pivotal step forward for inclusive sport, education, and collaboration—fueled by the shared passion of coaches, educators, and project partners.

A total of 86 participants from 14 countries came together in the vibrant city of Madrid to take part in the Judo Intellectual Disability Project (JIDP) Phase 5 – Train the Trainer Program, alongside the International Congress on Social Inclusion Through Judo. The energy, commitment, and sense of purpose shared among participants were both palpable and inspiring.

Day 1: Arrival and Opening Sessions – Friday, 11 July

Participants arrived on Thursday, 10 July, with anticipation building ahead of Friday’s official opening. Hosted by the Spanish Judo Federation, the congress began with a warm welcome in the lecture hall. The opening session featured addresses by the Federation’s General Secretary and a representative of the President, affirming Spain’s strong support for adaptive judo.

Project Coordinator Jose Morales then provided an insightful update on the current status and future direction of the JIDP. This was followed by a dynamic opening presentation by program organisers and lead tutors James Mulroy and Cilia Evenblij, who set the tone for the two-day event.

The morning’s theory session included:

  • A review of the four previous online phases completed over the past 18 months.
  • An overview of the practical sessions to come.
  • A refresher on the Adapted Judo Safety Rules, with emphasis on understanding the “Why Behind the Rules”—an essential component for responsible coaching.
  • A detailed explanation of the skill levels and classification system for adapted judo athletes, providing a foundation for workshop task ahead.

Afternoon Workshop: Creative Collaboration in Action

The afternoon shifted to an interactive, hands-on format, beginning with a playful group warm-up led by James and Cilia. Participants were then split into diverse working groups (mixed by nationality, gender, and coaching experience) and were assigned mission task cards at random. Each group had 30 minutes to design and prepare a creative judo-based activity in response to their mission.

The room buzzed with innovation and creativity as groups presented their ideas, demonstrating inclusive coaching strategies and adaptive techniques. Presentations were followed by constructive feedback from program experts and peer review, fostering mutual learning. Five of the eight groups presented on Day 1, showcasing impressive creativity and collaboration.

In the evening, JIDP partner organisations convened for a strategic project meeting. Key topics included:

  • Progress review of the Train the Trainer program
  • Feedback on the current phase
  • Planning for the launch of the Athlete Healthy Eating App in September 2025
  • Preparation for the final mobility phase in Poland, scheduled for 2026

Day 2: Completion, Kata, and Closing Moments – Saturday, 12 July

Day 2 began with the remaining three groups presenting their mission tasks. The ideas presented built on the momentum from the previous day, with enthusiastic participation and strong audience engagement.

The final session of the program featured a special Adapted/Unified Kata Workshop, delivered by Cilia. Coaches took part in an inspiring and polished performance of unified kata, highlighting the discipline, unity, and adaptability of the group. The audience responded with admiration, acknowledging both the technical skill and inclusive spirit on display.

Closing Formalities & Looking Ahead

The congress concluded with the presentation of certificates, honouring all participants for their dedication and contribution. A large group photo captured the spirit of unity and celebration that defined the entire event.

We extend our sincere thanks to everyone who attended, participated, and contributed to this vibrant gathering of inclusion-focused professionals. Your passion continues to drive the evolution of adaptive judo across Europe and beyond.

We now look ahead to the launch of the Athlete Healthy Eating App in September 2025, and our final mobility meeting in Poland in 2026, as we move toward the successful completion of the JIDP journey.
